Oxfordshire Business Awards 2008 – winners
Oxfordshire Business Awards 2008 Sustainability Category
Huge congratulations to Gifford & Partners of Witney, who have won the Sustainability Category of the 2008 Oxfordshire Business Awards. Giffords are a consultancy of engineers and specialist advisors in buildings, civil engineering and environmental development planning.
Not only is their service and products environmentally friendly and helps their clients to reduce their own use of resources as well. They have also paid attention to their internal housekeeping, reducing use of resources by minimising their use of paper and printing, reducing office waste, switching off PC’s and other office equipment when not in use, purchase office supplies locally and are monitoring their energy and water usage to keep costs down.
Their ‘Framework for Sustainability’ is available on their website. A representative from Giffords attended the Milton Park Resource Efficiency Club, OxSBP ‘Green Office’ event and the OxSBP Site Waste Management Plans event in January to gain ideas and inspiration for resource efficiency.
Runners up are (and big congratulations to them both too!)
Maylarch Environmental Ltd of Eynsham, who specialise in asbestos management, asbestos removal and demolition.
Even though their business is about waste, they manage to recycle an impressive 91% of waste produced, a 2% improvement since the company last entered in 2006; and they plan to improve this further!
They have also paid attention to their internal housekeeping in the office accommodation, have stopped using plastic disposable cups and replaced them with washable china and glass (saves waste), they are sending out documents on CD rather than hardcopy, print double sided, changed their toilet cisterns to water saving ones and all of their drivers had undergone awareness training to reduce the amount of fuel used. A Representative from Maylarch attended the OxSBP Site Waste Management Plans event in January, not only to gain ideas and inspiration, but ensure that Maylarch were well prepared for the new legislation.
Lti-Metaltech Ltd who are based at Milton Park, between Abingdon and Didcot. This company manufactures the metal bodies for MRI body scanners.
A representative from their company participated in the Milton Park Resource Efficiency Club and gained many ideas for reducing waste and saving money. The also had a free energy audit from the Carbon Trust and have saved overall £78,000 in a year from the measures taken. You can see their Best Practise case study on the OxSBP website . Their representative attended the Cherwell Resource Efficiency Club, where he gave an inspirational presentation on how the company had achieved such impressive savings.
Judging this year was very difficult, as so many local companies have implemented resource efficiency measures, which is very good news. If your business was not shortlisted this year – commiserations. You are all doing great work, please keep it up!
